U.S.S. Arkansas 1944 Pictorial Review

$110.00

“U.S.S. ARKANSAS 1944 PICTORIAL REVIEW”.  9 ¼” wide x 12 1/4” tall, soft cover, 64 pages. Published by T.O. Metcalf, Boston, MA. This book, similar to the old LIFE magazine in format, was presented on the 32nd birthday of the U.S.S. Arkansas, September 17, 1944, to the Officers and Sailors who served aboard her. It gives a history of the ship, it’s Commanding Officers since she was commissioned in 1912, and running through her involvement in the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944. Similar to a school yearbook, it has thirty group photographs of the Gunnery Department, the ship’s Marine Detactment, Aviation, Fire Control, Naviagtion, Engineering, and etc.  There are sections “We Were There” and “We Hit Again”, with photos and story line of the Arkansas’ recent involvements in WW2 through late 1944. It was given by a member of the Gunnery Department, Fifth Division to his friend, and is so inscribed on the title page. He circled his “Regular Turret Crew” and made comments in ink occasionally through the book. Slight losses to the upper left of the paper cover, as shown, with expected wear to the spine and cover from age. The over-all condition is solid with excellent interior condition and the book has great content! This is quite a scarce Naval pictorial history of a famous  Wyoming class battleship. She was active through both World War 1 and World War Two! Her World War Two duties include to support convoys to England and the ETO, to support the D-Day Landings, the bombardment of Cherbourg, and the Invasion of Southern France. She was then sent to the Pacific and participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima and the invasion of Okinawa. Later she helped move troops home after the end of hostilities. Interestingly she was “expended” is nucular tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946. Simply are rare book, with a small production run. Price: $110.00 (ref. B-769)
