Historical Blue "Landing of Gen Lafayette at Castle Garden, New York, 16 Aug 1824"

$375.00

Historical Blue Staffordshire, “Landing of Gen Lafayette at Castle Garden, New York, 16th August 1824” by CLEWS. 10” diameter example. The pottery works of James and Ralph Clews was located in Cobridge in Bursham, England, and was active from 1819 to 1829 (some say 1836). The transfer shows two ships in the harbor at Castle Garden, New York, those being the Chancellor Livingston and the Robert Fulton. A salute by six cannons is being fired on shore. At the time thousands of people met La Fayette to welcome him back to America after the Revolution. Conditon notes; There are three dots of glaze absence on the rim of the plate. these are from the three feet of the stand placed between plates as they were stacked in the kiln for firing. These are typical manufacturing blems seen on much of the Historical Blue Staffordshire produced in England, for the American market during the early Ninteenth Century. The plate overall appears with bright shiny glaze, and with no knife cuts. The blue is deep with nice contrast between blue and white. The details of the transfer design are clear, as is the title of the engraving located below the cannons. The back has the impressed maker’s mark logo; a circle with a crown within and “CLEWS WARRENTED STAFFORDSHIRE” around the outside. The “CLEWS” portion is weakly impressed and “EWS” is absent in “CLEWS” The logo impression is 1 5/16” in diameter. This larger plate is impressive with it’s deep blue color. Price: $375.00 (ref. B-625b)
