Historical Blue Staffordshire, States Pattern Plate- by CLEWS, c. 1825

$275.00

Historical Blue Staffordshire, States Border PLATE- by CLEWS. 8 5/8” diameter example. The pottery works of James and Ralph Clews was located in Cobridge in Bursham, England, and was active from 1819 to 1829 (some say 1836). The deep blue patriotic themed plate border shows the names of fifteen states in loops of ribbon, with blind justice holding a portrait of George Washington, and Independance kneeling. The center cartouche shows a building with sheep grazing on the lawn. Condition notes: There is a white wisp on the lawn, where the transfer image lifted and was not glazed to the plate when it was fired. There are five places on the edge of the plate, located between 7 and 9 (viewing the plate as a clock face) where the edge was unglazed during firing. These represent as rough spots. These are typical manufacturing blems seen on much of the Historical Blue Staffordshire produced during the early Ninteenth Century. The plate overall appears with a bright shiny glaze, and with no knife cuts. The blue is deep with nice contrast between blue and white. The details of the transfer design are clear. The back has the impressed maker’s mark logo; a circle with a crown within and “CLEWS WARRENTED STAFFORDSHIRE” around the outside. The logo impression is 1 5/16” in diameter. This “States” pattern plate is bright and presents beautifully. Circa 1825. Price: $275.00 (ref. B-625)
