Carte de Visite San Franciso Militia Man with a Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword. By the 1860’s there were twenty something California State Militias in San Francisco alone! They organized out of the Fire Houses and civic clubs across the city. Here is a bearded member with a plumed red kepi and red shirt with crossed fire axes on his lower sleeves. His left hand rests on the scabbard of a US Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword. His uniform finishes with a military belt with oval buckle, and blue pants with a red stripeThe hand tinted finish has typical fine japanning of the tint pigment. Reverse is marked to the studio; ”Bayley & Winter,” in angled script, with “618 & 620 WASHINGTON STREET, SAN FRANCISCO, CAL.”  The bottom of the card reads “Additional copies can always be obtained.” A scarce relic of California Civil War history! Worthy of further research. He and the other CDV image I am offering appear to be from the same unit. Price: $225.00 (TR A-113)
