U.S. Navy WW2 Mark 1Deck Clock made by Chelsea Clock Co.

$580.00

U. S. Navy WW2 Mark 1 Deck Clock made by Chelsea Clock Co of Boston, Massachusetts. The clock is a Chelsea Model 17K with an 8 day, 11 jewel movement. It is housed in a heavy chrome plated brass case with a “Thermo-Sealed” crystal. The case hinges from a bulkhead mounting plate with a wing-nut to keep it closed. Dimensions: 7 7/8” diameter at mounting plate base and 3 1/4” deep. Weight: Nine pounds. With the case “dogged down” against the gasket in the plate, this model was considered dust-proof and moisture-proof. The clock is wound and adjusted from the back of the case. These adjustments are behind a dust-proof plate, which has opened and closed positions. It has a 6 inch black dial with Arabic numerals, and a seconds sub-dial below the 12. The lower face is marked; “MARK I DECK CLOCK, U.S. Naval Observatory “logo” 9108 1941”. The clock works are marked; “CHELSEA CLOCK CO BOSTON U.S.A. 285346” This serial number was in the range of those produced in January 1942. The chrome finish is excellent, with only very minor dings. The gasket on the mounting plate is aged and no longer moisture resistant. It could be replaced if so desired. The dial has hour marker loss on the 6 and 7 hours (now half-moons). The Thermo-Sealed crystal, which is basically an early plastic, has a fine 1/2” scratch between the 10 and 11 hours which runs parallel with the hands as they pass, as well as other minor rubs. Overall this Mark I Deck Clock is a great example of American craftsmanship at it’s finest. This WW2 generation of Navy clocks were designed to have interchangeable parts for ease of repair. This is a massive Deck Clock built to endure anything. It runs well and keeps good time. Price $580.00 (ref. C-260)
