Vietnam War era USAF “Butane Fire Starter”

$120.00

Vietnam War era USAF SRU-21P Survival Vest “Butane Fire Starter”, or Survival Lighter. These were included in both the U.S. Army survival vest kit and the OV-1 RSSK kits. The lighter is made of machined aluminum, with a bronze anodized finish. There is a minor loss on the lighter base as shown. It measures 2-7/16" long by 13/16" in diameter. The knurled top unscrews revealing an o-ring seal. The knurled flame chimney can be rotated open to turn the valved butane on, then the striker wheel can be struck and the butane ignited. Further opening the knurled chimney exposes the flint mechanism and the double o-ringed stem into the butane chamber of the body. It appears the flint can be replaced. The striker wheel on this example rotates, but I believe the flint has de-graded and needs to be replaced. I am not sure these were meant to be re-filled, but I understand from web-posts there may be a way to fill them. This unit has no butane and will be shipped dry, that is without any butane. It has a label, but it is no longer present and only a bit of label glue remains. It is quite a mechanism with fine parts and three o-rings. It is complete and has all it’s anodized finish. These USAF SRU-21P Survival Fire Starters are a scarce piece of Vietnam survival gear, usually missing in the Vest. I have two of these and the other has a faded label. The ionterior shots are of that lighter. Both lighters are the same model. Price: $120.00 (ref. C-168)
