Venetian Black Coral Carved Moor Head Pendent. Black coral and 18 kt Gold. 1 3/8” tall x 5/8” wide. The ring at the top is marked; “ITALY” & “K 18”. Moors traveled throughout the Islamic world east towards Spain from the 10th through the 13th Centuries. They sailed through-out the Mediterranean, starting in Spain, trading eastern goods and bringing new items like Citrus Fruits and sugars from India to Christian Europe. They soon integrated into society in Venice and many were respected in the wealthy business class. Carving Blackamoor heads from deep sea black coral became fashionable in Venice at that time and remains so today. This example has extraordinary carving. The facial details are fine and striking. The 18 kt gold collar and head cover are a lovely pierced rococo design. Her collar is simple and dignified. This example is an early 20th Century piece created by a master carver.
