Chelsea Yacht Wheel Clock with Ship’s Bells.
Chelsea Yacht Wheel Clock with Ship’s Bells.
Chelsea Yacht Wheel Clock with Ship’s Bells. This heavy brass cased clock is made by CHELSEA of Boston, Massachusetts. It has an 11 jewel, three plate movement and a 3 ½” face. Dimensions are 6 ¾” wide (at wheel tips 3&6) x 7” tall, 3 ¼” deep. And a 5 ½” diameter base having a black rubber pad added. It weighs 6.2 pounds. The silvered face, with black wax numbers, has some fine age spots and scratches, none are distracting or major. The beveled glass face cover and brass ring are hinged at the right (3 o’clock) to facilitate winding and clock adjustments. The brass remains unpolished with a slight mustard patina with some fine brown freckling. If the brass is polished by the new owner, it should have some clear lacquer applied over the bright case. The clock strikes in the naval tradition, on the hour and half hour, as following; 1 bell: 12:30, 4:30, 8:30; 2 bells: 1:00, 5:00, 9:00; 3 bells: 1:30, 5:30, 9:30; 4 bells: 2:00, 6:00, 10:00; 5 bells: 2:30, 6:30, 10:30; 6 bells: 3:00, 7:00, 11:00; 7 bells: 3:30, 7:30, 11:30; and 8 bells: 12:00, 4:00, 8:00. I have not opened this case to retrieve a serial number on the movement. The movement would be marked CHELSEA CLOCK COMPANY BOSTON MASS with a serial number. This clock is probably post-WW2 vintage. It keeps good time and strikes properly. Chelsea clocks are wonderful American made timepieces which are well known for their fine movements. This clock would be commanding on a desk or a shelf in a library. Complete with the key shown. Price: $425.00 (ref. C-261)
