British Royal Document Seal Brass Case with wax seal & ribbon

Sale Price:$350.00 Original Price:$385.00

British red wax Royal Seal in it’s original round brass Seal Case. The brass case is much like a shoe polish can, the top sides slip over the base sides. The cover has a royal crown, which has the inscription “Miserere Mei Deus” or “Have mercy on me, O God” die-pressed on the head band of the crown, in lovely detail. The quote is from Psalm 51. The case was patented during the reign of George the Third, it’s bottom is red wax sealed onto a 5” piece of blue grosgrain ribbon slipped through the bottom via two slot openings at the base of the case bottom, I believe this feature is what was patented. A document from the King, or Queen to any of the aristocractic or Noble class would have a wax-sealed ribbon affixed at the bottom of the document, near the signer’s name. The ribbon would also have this case, holding an additional wax seal further out the ribbon. These Seal Cases were usually separated from their original document. The seal has much of it’s details, there are some muddled details due to “adorationial touching” over the years. It is very unusual to find these Royal Seal Cases with a remnant of the original ribbon. The blue ribbon present is somewhat stiff from wax migrating into it from the seal over many years. These were in use from the reign of George the Third and later. I would guess this example is from the 19th Century.  The brass case is 2 3/8” in diameter and 1 3/16” deep. What makes this example a stand-out is it’s remarkable condition. The details of the crown on the cover are sharp and clear. The finish has a lovely frosted patina. In “coin world” the finish might be termed, “in Mint state”. This case has never been cleaned or polished!  A Wonderful English Royal Wax Seal Case! So rare to have an example with some original ribbon present! Price: $385.00 (ref. B-816). As with all my items, please feel free to contact me to discuss this piece.
