Happy Buddha Head of finely carved Boxwood with a 14 Kt gold suspension loop added to the existing hole. 7/8” (22 mm) tall x 13/16” (20 mm) wide, 1 3/16” (30 mm) tall to the top of the gold loop. This Netsuke/Charm or Ojime bead represents the Chinese 10th Century Monk; Budai often called the Happy Buddha, believed to be an incarnation of the future Buddha. His name means “cloth bag”, which he carried filled with treats and goods for the poor. He symbolizes abundance, happiness and contentment. This boxwood bead is very finely carved and has great detail for it’s tiny size. The back of his head has two Chinese characters. These could be a signature of the carver, or could identify the temple where this bead was carved by a local artisan and sold as a souvenir. I feel this bead is an old object and not a recently produced piece based on it’s quality and patina. The 14 kt gold loop is unmarked and was recently added to make this bead a lovely pendent.
