"Dewey Visits New York" Medal. On the U.S.S. Olympia, 1899

$145.00

“Dewey Visits New York” Medal. These medals were struck to commemorate Admiral Dewey’s trip to New York City aboard his flagship, U.S.S. Olympia , September 28-30, 1899. The medal is hung from a stamped and cut out pin back devise, in the shape of the Olympia, made with nice detailing of the ship. The medal is 36mm (1 3/8”) in diameter, 2 ½” from top to bottom with pinback devise. The finish is  “proof-like” bright finished bronze. The front shows a quarter bust of Dewey w/ “NEW YORK WELCOMES THE HERO”” in half round above, and the dates, “Sept. 28-30, 1899”, over his shoulders. The reverse shows the Olympia under power, on water, w/ “OLYMPIA 5800 Tons” below, and surrounding, “DEWEY’S FLAG-SHIP RETURNED TO NEW YORK SEP.28, 1899”. This medal is near excellent w/ a few “cat whisker” handling marks. This is a very limited issue minted medal commemorating the Hero of  Manila, and his return to New York City. The Olympia and five other U.S. Warships entered Manila Bay on May 1, 1898. The Spanish fleet lay at anchor there and opened fire on the American ships. The American fleet made five broadside passes by the Spanish fleet, and by the last pass destroyed their ships. This is a great naval Spanish American War commemorative medal! Price: $145.00 (ref. TB-52-778)
