Sheffield Patriotic Side Knife, with a silver Pocket Watch and Fob identified to U.S.M.C. 2nd Lieutenant Percival Clarence Pope. 9 7/16” overall, having a 5 7/8” spear point blade. The knife is made by “George Butler & Co SHEFFIELD” and it is so marked on the riccoso of inscribed side of the knife. The German Silver guard is engraved; “U.S.M.C. Nov. 25, 1861”. The ivory handles are each 3 5/8” in length, with a silver cartouche on the inscribed side. It is engraved; “Lt. P.C. Pope”. These scales are held to the tang with two pins. Typical of these Patriotic Side Knives, the blade on the inscribed side is acid etched; “NEVER DRAW ME WITHOUT REASON NOR SHEATH ME WITHOUT HONOUR” in two lines surrounded with a floral banner. Condition notes; there is some pitting on both riccosos, and some pit spots on the reverse blade. There are several very fine “cat whisker” scratches and a light rub visible at the side blade-rib below the words; “WITHOUT REASON”. Overall the metal is bright with typical finish toning spots and scratches from time and actual use. There is a nick in the lower blade 1 5/16” from the guard. The Pocket Watch is a JULES HUGUENIN Hunting Case model. It is currently not running. There is an engraving on the inside the case with his name and Civil War engagements aboard the ship he was posted to; “P.C. Pope U.S. Marine Corps, Port Royal, S.C. Bay Point S.C., Fort Sumptner 1863, U.S.S. Powhatan” There is also a Fob, and several information papers, as shown. Price: $3,250.00 (ref. C-287)
